The Role: Director, Market Data Acquisition

The Location: New York, NY

The Team: The Inbound Data Acquisition team at S&P Dow Jones Indices engages with hundreds of market data vendors globally to support our industry-leading index operations. The primary responsibilities of the group are to manage SPDJI's market data acquisition process and strategy by identifying sources, negotiating commercial terms, performing contract reviews and managing relationships with existing providers. As a whole, the team functions as the internal Subject Matter Expert on market data sources and derived licensing policies and practices.

The Impact: This full-time Director position will be responsible for the strategic sourcing of a wide range of market data - including pricing, terms & conditions, corporate actions, fundamental and other data types - and to contribute to the overall data acquisition strategy, guidance and support of internal clients and operations.

As part of the Inbound Data Acquisition team, you will work collaboratively with a wide range of functional teams across global markets to acquire the data resources needed to launch and maintain a wide range of index methodologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with internal stakeholders (product management, operations, legal, finance, etc.) in identifying & securing market data sources and terminal products needed to support R&D, development and calculation functions for the index and related businesses.
  • Negotiate with third parties for internal, derived use and redistribution of their content and services on optimal commercial/cost terms.
  • Maintain a broad portfolio of relationships with existing providers and on-board and build relationships with new data contributors.
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert on source data used throughout firm and leverage that knowledge accordingly to promote benefits and efficiencies and mitigate business risk; analyze and communicate changes in market data source policies and fees to internal business lines; ensure awareness of commercial and contractual obligations stemming from provider contracts.
  • Maintain awareness of offerings and policies of global stock and derivatives exchanges, dealers and other market data vendors - across the asset class spectrum - and forecast and communicate trends to internal stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Broad knowledge of and relationships within market data vendor firms globally, including (but not limited to) major and niche information vendors, exchanges, risk and analytic platforms, etc.
  • Understanding of derived data use case policies, trends and commercial practices among data providers such as exchanges, index providers and/or information vendors.
  • Proven background in negotiating complex vendor agreements.
  • Excellent: interpersonal & relationship management skills, ability to operate autonomously and within a matrix organization, analytical skills to identify and evaluate potential strategic opportunities
  • Proven project management and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge of finance and investment vehicles especially index-based applications
  • Prior experience working for index providers or other derived data consumers
  • Skills with or prior use of leading market data platforms & terminals either as a consumer or employee of such an organization
  • Advanced MS Excel Skills, knowledge of FITS billing system
  • Experience with commercial contracts
