The EIB, the European Union's bank, is seeking to recruit for its Risk Management Directorate – Financial Risk Department

The EIB, the European Union's bank, is seeking to recruit for its Risk Management Directorate – Financial Risk Department – ALM and Market Risk Division – ALM Unit, at its headquarters in Luxembourg, an (Senior) Risk Officer - Asset & Liability Management (*). This is a full-time position at Grade 5/6


The ALM Unit analyses and processes financial data in order to report on EIB profitability, maintains and enhances the Fund Transfer Pricing system, and prepares business projections, analysis and stress tests. The team contributes to the Bank’s Operational Plan, the Group Capital Plan, the Interest Rate Risk strategy, and other forward-looking simulations involving the financials of the Bank.

These activities involve manipulating large datasets (often in short periods of time), addressing ad-hoc requests and preparing standard reports.

As (Senior) Officer, you will design, review, maintain and report on financial risk policies, models and methodologies in line with relevant best banking practices and evolving business requirements of the EIB Group. As part of your daily tasks, you will rely heavily on the use of the CompatibL IT system, Business Objects and other standard EIB IT tools. In order to produce the deliverables, you will need to combine strong quantitative and technical skills with an understanding of the EIB business model, financial markets and relevant regulation.

Operating network

Reporting directly to the Head of ALM Unit, you will work closely with the colleagues from the Funding Directorate, Front Office Lending, General Secretariat, Financial Control, Information Technology, Internal Audit and the European Investment Fund. You will also interact externally with peer institutions, consultancy and audit firms.


  • Develop models in domains of loan pricing, fund transfer pricing, interest rate risk in the banking book (IRRBB), IRRBB capital charges, funding requirement analyses and other related areas
  • Prepare business projections, analysis, stress tests and reports covering, among others, P&L, net interest income, funding and leverage
  • Lead the Unit’s contribution to EIB Group Risk report and prepare explanations on the evolution of the reported metrics under the responsibility of the Unit
  • Lead reporting on profitability per product line, analyse trends and explain in a concise and clear manner the evolution of the key metrics
  • Execute updates of EIB base lending curve (“Blue Curve”) and produce related reports
  • Independently respond to ad-hoc demands including initiatives/policies related to the content of the post, including in the form of quantitative analysis and impact assessments, to working groups and permanent committees (e.g. ALCO and sub-ALCO committees)
  • Automate processes in Unit’s domain and implement process improvements, including the strengthening of 2nd Line of Defence functions and streamlining of reporting activities
  • Maintain and update the Financial Risk and ALM Guidelines and related procedures and methodologies
  • Closely follow latest market and best banking practice evolutions on relevant subjects impacting the Division
  • Foster constructive working relationships on transversal topics both within RM and beyond (e.g. as part ICAAP, Capital Planning, Stress Testing…)
  • Proactively assist the Head of Division and Head of Unit in the relevant activities of the division and provide guidance to more junior staff in the conception/execution of risk processes and use of applications


  • University degree, preferably in Mathematics, Economics, Finance or another quantitative subject. Post-graduate studies in these subjects and professional qualifications such as PRM or FRM certifications would be an advantage
  • Significant relevant professional experience in ALM, Financial Risk Management and/or another relevant Financial/Quantitative field, and including:
    • Strong knowledge of quantitative and financial modelling (e.g. yield curve modelling, VaR methodology, BPV calculation, transfer pricing systems, net interest income simulations, capital allocation models)
    • Strong knowledge of ALM and market risk management techniques (theory, principles, regulation and practices)
    • Thorough understanding of how financial markets (money-market, capital markets and derivatives) operate
  • Knowledge of at least one of the following oriented-object programming languages would be considered as an advantage: C#, C++, Python, Java
  • Knowledge of internally used IT systems like WSS (FK), Business Objects and CompatibL would be an asset
  • Ability to work effectively in a high pressure, fast paced environment with multiple deadlines and competing priorities
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French, with a good knowledge of the other (*).  Knowledge of other EU languages would be an advantage

(*) There may be certain flexibility on this requirement, but limited to particularly suitable candidates who may not yet be proficient in French. The term of this contract will be 4 years

The EIB offers fixed-term contracts of up to a maximum of 6 years, according to business needs, with a possibility to convert to a permanent contract, subject to organisational requirements and individual performance.
