Company:
Our client is a well-established construction business operating across a strong pipeline of projects, based in Melbourne's northern suburbs (Their head office is based in the northern suburbs, but we deliver projects across the whole of Victoria). Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Commercial Manager to join their team.
The role:
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who has worked squarely on the contractor side of the table, not a consulting or advisory background. You'll be expected to actively manage commercial negotiations, protect the business's position on client variations, and bring commercial rigour to live projects.
Responsibilities:
- Manage commercial and contractual matters across a portfolio of construction projects
- Lead negotiations on variations, claims, and contractual disputes, pushing back where required to protect margin and project outcomes
- Work closely with project teams, estimating, and senior leadership to ensure commercial outcomes align with project delivery
- Review and manage subcontractor agreements and head contracts
- Provide commercial reporting and risk analysis to senior stakeholders
About you
- Proven track record as a Commercial Manager within a Tier 2 or Tier 3 construction business
- Genuine hands-on experience managing commercial negotiations from the contractor's side, not purely an advisory or consulting background
- Strong understanding of construction contracts (e.g. AS4000, AS4902 or similar)
- Confident, commercially savvy, and comfortable pushing back where needed to protect the business's interests
- Based in or able to easily commute to Melbourne's northern suburbs (This person will be commuting to different project sites, working approximately four days onsite and one day at the head office.)
- Background in construction law is preferred.
