Data Engineer(Python/AWS/SQL)

London Stock Exchange Group Bangalore, Inde
Future Talent: Python Software Engineer
(Talent Community - India)

Location: Bengaluru / Hyderabad

Position Type: Future Opening - Talent Pipeline

The Opportunity

Join FTSE Russell and help build the services, libraries, and applications that power indices trusted by financial institutions worldwide. We are growing a community of engineers who care about software craftsmanship, clean code, and shipping software that matters.

Python is our primary language and our preference, but strong engineering judgement matters more than a particular language. If your production experience is in Java, C#, C, C++, Scala, Go, or Rust and you are motivated to work in Python, we would like to hear from you.

This is a hands-on software development opportunity. You will design, code, test, deploy, and support modern software in an AWS environment. The systems handle significant volumes of financial data, but the core craft we are hiring for is software engineering.

What You'll Do (When You Join Us)

As a Python Software Engineer, you will help build our next-generation index data platform and take ownership from problem definition through production support.

Design & Build
  • Write production code, primarily in Python, across services, APIs, libraries, and command-line tools that are modular, well tested, and maintainable.
  • Design and build software components end to end, from breaking down a problem through deployment and support in production.
  • Create data models and integrations across Aurora PostgreSQL and object storage, with careful attention to schema design, evolution, and backwards compatibility.
  • Build software that processes data at scale on AWS using services such as Lambda, S3, containerised services, Glue, and EMR Serverless where appropriate .
Engineer for Quality
  • Apply modern engineering practices including version control, trunk-based development, CI/CD, code review, refactoring, and automated unit, integration, and contract testing.
  • Build observability in from the start through structured logging, metrics, tracing, and meaningful alerting.
  • Debug your own problems, fix them properly, and take responsibility for the quality and reliability of what you deliver.
Collaborate & Contribute
  • Contribute to design and architecture discussions and help evolve shared engineering standards.
  • Work directly with product and business teams to turn requirements into working software.
  • Review code, pair when useful, share knowledge, and learn the financial indices domain.
What You'll Bring

Essential - this is the bar:
  • A track record of building and shipping production applications, services, or libraries that other people depended on and that you maintained and evolved over time.
  • Strong production Python, or equivalent depth in Java, C#, C, C++, Scala, Go, or Rust, together with genuine motivation to become fluent in Python.
  • The ability to write clean, maintainable, testable, and extensible code. In Python, this includes type hints, ruff, mypy , black, and a strong pytest habit, or equivalent discipline in your current language.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including modular design, sensible abstractions, dependency management, packaging, error handling, and judgement about when not to add another layer.
  • A hands-on mindset and a desire to remain close to the code.
  • Practical experience with Git-based workflows, code review, and CI/CD.
  • Strong relational database experience, ideally Aurora PostgreSQL, including schema design, query writing, and understanding database behaviour under the hood.
  • Working knowledge of a cloud platform, ideally AWS, including S3, Lambda, containers, and IAM fundamentals.
  • Comfort with data-shaped problems such as batch processing, ETL, and schema evolution, or a strong willingness to learn.
  • An interest in business context and close stakeholder partnership.
  • Experience working collaboratively in Agile teams.
Nice to Haves

Helpful experience, but not a requirement:
  • Apache Spark, PySpark , or other large-scale distributed processing technologies.
  • Big-data workloads and datasets that do not fit on one machine.
  • Scala, Java, C++, Go, or Rust used for performance-sensitive or high-throughput software.
  • Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, similar open table formats, or lakehouse architecture.
  • Databricks, Snowflake, or comparable data platforms.
  • CI/CD tooling such as GitLab CI, Jenkins, or GitHub Actions.
  • Infrastructure as code using Terraform or AWS CDK.
  • Data quality frameworks such as Great Expectations or Deequ .
  • Curiosity about financial markets, index data, or investment analytics.
  • Experience in investment banking, asset or portfolio management, or a product-led company.
What You'll Bring to Our Engineering Culture
  • Build With Purpose - Start with why, define the problem clearly, and deliver meaningful outcomes.
  • Customer Driven - Work backwards from customer needs and use continuous feedback.
  • Technically Courageous - Tackle complex problems, push boundaries, and keep raising the engineering bar.
  • Learn and Be Curious - Continuously learn, experiment, and share knowledge.
  • Act as Owner - Take responsibility for quality, reliability, and long-term value.
  • Lead with Data - Use precise evidence to guide decisions, identify risks, and learn from outcomes.
  • Dive Deep - Stay close to the details, investigate discrepancies, and correct course quickly.
  • Build Responsibly, Deliver Incrementally - Prioritise scalable, secure, reliable solutions and improve them through feedback.
  • Collaborate to Achieve - Communicate openly, work respectfully, and value how work is done as much as what is delivered.
